ArkBackup - Task management

Task details

Select a task in the task viewer on the main window, then click on the menu "Task" - "Task details...", or just double click on the selected task, you can view and modify the task details

  • Source

In the source page, you can modify the name of the task, and the source data of the task. If the source data is changed, then the next backup will apply the changes.

  • Target

In the target page, you can modify the "backup method", "backup type", "target backup archive" and compression option, password protection of the task.

Backup method - You can specify the backup archive type: ArkBackup archive file (.abkf), ZIP package file or just keep the original form of files (store). The ArkBackup archive file (.abkf) is recommended since it can maximize the effect of ArkBackup features.

If you select "Compress to a single ZIP package file", you can see an option : Remove path info in ZIP archive. Make this option checked if you don't want to keep the path info of the original files in ZIP archive.

If you select "Copy to destination", you can see two options: Don't keep folder structure, Overwrite the exsiting file in destination folder with same name when copying. If the first option is checked, then all files in source folder, no matter the files in which level (e.g. in the source folder directly, or in the sub folder of the source folder), they will all be copied to the target folder, no any folder structure will be kept.

Backup type - The incremental backup backs up the whole sources at the first time, and then only backs up the changed files since last backup. This can decrease the amount of backup time obviously. One source file can be backed up time after time if it was modified before next backup. Then it will has multiple "versions" in the backup archive. Each "version" of the file is backed up in different timing catalog. This mean you can get any "version" of this source file from the backup archive file if you want.

    • Please note, for "Incremental backup" tasks, the compression option and password protection option, are only applied for the newly backup data in the archive. ArkBackup will not change the backed up data in the existing archive.

E.g. You don't have sent the password protection for a task originally. You runned this task and all backed up data in the backup archive are not password protected. Then you modify the task details to add password protection to this task. Then you run this task again. If some source files are modified and they are newly backed up to the new timing catalog in this archive, then the newly backed up files in the new timing catalog are password protected. When restoring, you don't need to enter a password for the first backed up files and will be asked to enter the correct password for the later backed up files.

    • For "Fully Backup" type tasks (At here, means "ZIP" or "Copy" method"), you even can add a date stamp into the filename for the target backup archive. E.g. maybe you want to backup your data to the archive whoes name like "D:\My Backup\MyData_2009-03-24.zip" to show the create date of the archive. Obviously, The "Incremental Backup" type tasks can't and needn't use this feature.

ArkBackup supports this. Just click the "..." button to show the "Save As" dialogue box and you can see the "Add date stamp to filename" option in the dialogue box as below. Make this option checked and you can specify the date format. "yyyy" means 4-digit year number and "yy" means 2-digit year number, "mm" means the month number for Jan. to Sep. with a leading zero(01-09) and "m" means the month number without a leading zero(1-9). "dd" and "d" are similar to "mm" and "m" but just for day number. And you can specify the date separator and the position of the date stamp in whole filename. Click on "Refresh" button can update the preview for your specified options.

Run a single task

In general, the backup operation is based on project. But occasionally, you may need to run a single task only. Just select the task in the task viewer on the main window, then click on the menu "Task" - "Run task only" to do this.

Delete a task

To delete a task, select the task which you want to delete, in the task viewer on the main window. Then click on the menu "Task" - "Delete task".
